Terrarium Artist Moves Into Tableware
Paula Hayes, the artist and gardener who creates fantastical environments like hand-blown terrariums, blobby silicone planters and otherworldly crystal-strewn landscapes for art world heavies, is now making objects for the rest of us. Her handmade tableware is sculptural and tactile and comes in the biomorphic shapes that are her signature: a deep blue wineglass is like a hobbit’s boot ($140); a glass plate looks like a jellyfish ($575); a cranberry-red water glass could be a vibrating bean ($160). Napkins ($75) are silk-screened with images of roots, houses and communications satellites, as are “repositionable art squares” — a k a self-adhesive wallpaper panels (set of nine, $150).
